Greetings lisam,
What is meant by the second coming?
Perhaps you could start with some of the Bible references that speak about the return of Jesus.

Acts 1:9–11 (KJV): 9 And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. 10 And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; 11 Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.

Acts 3:19–21 (KJV): 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord; 20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you: 21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

The last phrase above indicates that the return of Jesus is the subject matter spoken about by many of the OT prophets. Perhaps you could start your journey by discovering some of these writings and what they actually teach and I personally would start at Isaiah 2:1-4, but also consider Psalm 72.

Kind regards
Trevor

What is meant by the second coming?

And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him. 1 John 2:28-29

His Second coming is when He returns and appears to everyone.

He will gather His Church at the resurrection of the dead in Christ, and "rapture".

And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. Hebrews 9:27-28

  • To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time

May the LORD bless you and keep under the shadow of His wings, as you seek Him.

What is the Second Coming of Jesus Christ?
The second coming of Jesus Christ is the hope of believers that God is in control of all things, and is faithful to the promises and prophecies in His Word. In His first coming, Jesus Christ came to earth as a baby in a manger in Bethlehem, just as prophesied. Jesus fulfilled many of the prophecies of the Messiah during His birth, life, ministry, death, and resurrection. However, there are some prophecies regarding the Messiah that Jesus has not yet fulfilled. The second coming of Christ will be the return of Christ to fulfill these remaining prophecies. In His first coming, Jesus was the suffering Servant. In His second coming, Jesus will be the conquering King. In His first coming, Jesus arrived in the most humble of circumstances. In His second coming, Jesus will arrive with the armies of heaven at His side.

The Old Testament prophets did not make clearly this distinction between the two comings. This can be seen in Isaiah 7:14, 9:6-7 and Zechariah 14:4. As a result of the prophecies seeming to speak of two individuals, many Jewish scholars believed there would be both a suffering Messiah and a conquering Messiah. What they failed to understand is that there is only one Messiah and He would fulfill both roles. Jesus fulfilled the role of the suffering servant (Isaiah chapter 53) in His first coming. Jesus will fulfill the role of Israel’s deliverer and King in His second coming. Zechariah 12:10 and Revelation 1:7, describing the second coming, look back to Jesus being pierced. Israel, and the whole world, will mourn for not having accepted the Messiah the first time He came.

After Jesus ascended into heaven, the angels declared to the apostles, “‘Men of Galilee,’ they said, ‘why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven’” (Acts 1:11). Zechariah 14:4 identifies the location of the second coming as the Mount of Olives. Matthew 24:30 declares, “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.” Titus 2:13 describes the second coming as a “glorious appearing.”

The second coming is spoken of in greatest detail in Revelation 19:11-16, “I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and makes war. His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean. Out of his mouth comes a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. ‘He will rule them with an iron scepter.’ He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Hi lisam

Yes, Jesus came once to the earth. He was born as a baby and raised to show us how a life lived for God is like. He was then crucified, buried, resurrected and went back to the Father from where he had come. But he has promised to come back. The Scriptures tell us that we will see him with the clouds. That is the second coming.

At that time he is going to cull from all the inhabitants of the earth who have ever lived, a people. A group comprised of those who believed in the testimony of Jesus. He will gather them to safety and then the wrath of God will be released upon the earth until the end.

God bless,
Ted

What is meant by the second coming?
The Word of God declares 2 separate periods of the coming of Jesus Christ.

His 1st coming was prophesied to be about His coming meek as a lamb to be crucified. And actual events of that prophecy was given through David in Psalms 22 about a thousand years before it happened.

Christ's 2nd coming is about His future return to earth, but not meek as a lamb slain this next time, but this next wielding a sword to defeat His enemies on earth. That 2nd coming is also when He will gather His faithful Church to Himself, on His way to the Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem, on earth, where He also ascended to Heaven before, in view of His disciples per Acts 1. (see Zechariah 14 about His return on the future "day of the Lord").

One of men's doctrines that teaches falseness against Christ's future 2nd coming is man's false Pre-tribulational Rapture theory. They wrongly teach opposite of The Scriptures their claiming that Jesus comes to rapture His Church PRIOR to the coming time of "great tribulation" at the end of this world.

Jesus showed in Matthew 24:29-31 and Mark 13:24-27 that He comes AFTER... the future tribulation to gather His saints (i.e., His Church).

What is meant by the second coming?
Hey All,
Very simply, this passage from John talks about the second coming.

John 14:1-3 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

So it is Jesus coming back for us.

Keep walking everybody.
May God bless,
Taz

In John 14, Lord Jesus was pointing to the future Millennial 'sanctuary' with the "many mansions" idea, which per the Greek means 'abodes'.

God's House is given in layout detail starting in Ezekiel 40. The dwelling of Christ's elect will be in the priest's chambers mentioned in those Ezekiel 40 thru 46 chapters. That's what the "many mansions" of John 14 will be. And that is to manifest ON EARTH when Lord Jesus returns.

The Ezekiel 47 chapter is about detail description about the return of God's River of the Waters of Life back to this earth. That River is shown that it will flow out from under that Ezekiel 'sanctuary', and we are giving its location on earth in the middle east. Also with that River, will manifest the many trees with their fruits never be consumed, and their leaves as medicine, the same descriptions given in Revelation 22.

Here is a link to the 19th century Christian Bible scholar E.W. Bullinger, with the Appendix he did of a blueprint layout of that Millennial Sanctuary and Oblation of the future after Christ's future return...

What is meant by the second coming?

IMO we may speak of two Advents. The first was when God the son noncarnate entered into humanity in a carnate mode—the Logos became a human being, Jesus (Jhn.1:1,14). It was not technically a first coming of Jesus; the first coming became Jesus.

That was a permanent commitment to creation to dwell as created, Immanuel: Jesus may be called the Second, the Eschatological, Adam. His commitment required his death and his resurrection in order that we who are human could ourselves know a resurrection life alongside him throughout eternity. Many can taste this resurrection life in mortal bodies, while the race continues. But like a play that has a beginning and an end, there is a time for the curtain to come down; for the show to end.

Meanwhile he has left us physically, howbeit sending his invisible spirit to guide us and enlighten us in mortal days. The end—eschatos—will be when Jesus returns. At that stage, all who love God will rise and cloak ourselves in physical bodies immortal. We shall leave chrysalis life and live the immortal life that God intends for us as his children. For man, sin and death will be no more.

Thus, humanity might be called circular—generations come and go. Yet there is a goal, an eschatos. To that extent, humanity might in one way be called spiralling, like the grooves in a phonograph record. Or perhaps better, linear-cyclical. Human history is coming to the end of the preface. Earth will be looked back on as our nest, when Jesus returns.

Hi lisam and welcome to CF :wave2

To nutshell it is that Jesus came to earth as the promised Messiah the Prophets of the OT spoke of, but in the form of a baby. As He grew and the time was right He ministered God's hope of salvation to all who would have ears to hear and accept Him as Lord and Savior. He was crucified and died for our sins that all who will believe in Him will have eternal life with Him and God as God raised Him from the dead and now we have life in Him. It will help you to first read the book of Matthew, John and Acts as this will help explain the purpose Jesus first and second coming.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.
John 3:18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
John 3:19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.
John 3:21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

What is meant by the second coming?
Hello lisam.
Our Lord said not to be fooled by anyone claiming to be Christ, because His coming would appear as lightning illuminating the sky,

For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. Mt.24:27 KJV

The Lord said He would come when His disciples were under immense persecution,

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Mt.24:30

Our Savior meant He would be seen in the Spirit in the lives of us who have faith in Him,

Saul, Saul, whypersecutest thou ME?Act.26:14

Jesus is asking why Saul is persecuting His followers. His body. If that makes sense, all the "tribes of the earth" (gentiles from all tribes, not every gentile) repent when they see the immense suffering of Gods' people.

Why? Because what was done to our King was wrong and we understand unfair treatment (to put it mildly) when it gets laid on us.

His 2nd coming in person cannot be determined but will occur in the blink of an eye and the universe as we know it will be engulfed in fire.
