Since I am currently engaged and my mother is preparing me for being out on my own, she is teaching me how to grocery shop. She gives me a budget that I can't go over (unless I have the money to pay her back) and I pick out what I want and find what is the cheapest and I practice my addition and multiplication as well as rounding up and down the prices. I think it is a very good idea and I wondered what the other parents on here thought. :)

Goodness! I started teaching my kids about budgeting and bills and stuff when they were old enough to understand. By the time they were in middle school they knew how to comparison shop, compute unit price vs whole price (like per oz of two different products similarly priced), compute the sales tax in their heads. By the time they were in high school, they know what taxes were, could approximate their net paychecks and could budget. As adults 2 of my 3 have always done a great job managing money. The third...well...anyway. I always saw my job as a parent to be time-limited. I had 18 years to teach them how to be adults. They learned about bank accounts, how to handle a checking account and debit card. How to budget their money to pay car payments, car insurance, registration, repairs.

So, honestly, I think maybe you're starting a bit late. Do you know about how to budget for rent, utilities, etc yet? Do you know how much it is to register a car where you live? What about comparison shopping for things like car insurance? Do you understand the different types of car insurance (liability only vs. full coverage)? Do you know what the legal limits are in your state? Do you know how to handle a bank account?

I'm a slow learner due to the fact that I'm mentally challenged and I don't have the ability or money for a car yet but I am going to get involved with a bus service so that will help me a bit. Maybe some day I will be capable of driving, but right now I'm not and my mom currently handles my bank account and I'm on social security income right now.

I am not a parent but i understand things well. Its a great idea, but i dont think it gives a huge advantage in life. Because everything has different values and everything has different prices.

I think it is a great idea.
May I suggest two other ideas.
1/ write down on paper all your income, you have only one, some people have several jobs.
Then write down all the things you have to pay for, rent, fuel, insurance, food, clothing, savings and add them up.
Is it larger or smaller than your income?

Talk to your mother about how you can reduce some of these figures.

2/ to help you buyer your food bill try working out a menu for the week. List what you will eat and drink for breakfast, midmorning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, tea/diner and any thing had durring the evening.
Do this for everyday of the week.
The hard part is calculating how much bread is used for breakfast toast and how much butter and jam.
Or how long a pack of pasta will last/ how many meal it will give.
