I will lift up the spirits of mankind, and I promise to do only good by the way of the lord.

I will make bread and remember God.

I will thank Jesus Christ.

I will honor my mother and father and sister.

I will say grace every dinner.

I will remain upright and religious.

Everything sounded very good until the very last word destroyed it all!

I am confused. Of course religion is not a bad term. Christianity is a religion. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

Why do you think religion is a dirty word?

I think this word is related to everything that is false about Christianity and beliefs in general.
This is my opinion about it.
And there is nothing in the Bible about the word religion.

Who said that Christianity is a religion? God shurly didn't.
That's my best answer right now.
I think it is very good one.

Religion is the virtue by which we give to God the honour and service due to Him alone as our Creator, Master and Supreme Lord. In order to practice this virtue, we must:
  1. Believe all the truths revealed by God.
  2. Carry out in our lives what we learnt about the duties we owe to God, about His commands and wishes. Mere knowledge is not religion, and will avail us nothing. The devil has knowledge but has no religion. Religion is not a matter of feeling, it is a matter of will and action.
I see nothing in religion that is incompatible with or opposed to Christianity. On the contrary, Christianity IS the only true religion.

I agree Christianity is a virtue, it should be upheld

Okay.. "be quick to listen and slow to speak"
I have to eat my own words on the word religion not being in the Bible.
It shurly is in there.
Sorry about that..

The word is mentioned five times in the ESV translation.
Acts 25:19
Acts 26:5
Colossians 2:23
James 1:26
James 1:27

I like the last one. I think it actually speaks good about some types of religion and not good about others.

One definition that I read in answersingenesis.org it is:
"A system of belief that is a person's ultimate standard for reality - their worldview"

So then it is a man made standard, and not God's standard.
James talk about religion being an act of man. Either good or bad.
None of those verses speak about Christianity being a religion.
Shalom!

Christianity is not a religion. It is God and His family, and the recovery of the blessing of Adam. -Kenneth Hagin-

Welcome to CF and hope you continue to share with us so we get to know you better.

These are some of the high moral standards that a Spiritually born again from above child of God needs to be displaying within them self. It shows you are a virtuous man with integrity.

Christianity is not a religion.

God does not give us religion.

He gives us covenant relationship.

Covenant as between a husband and wife.

Do you consider the relationship between a husband and wife a religion oa personal relationship?

According to Wikipedia, Christianity is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion. Now I know there is a danger in using Wikipedia as a Bible, but we need a neutral umpire. And Wikipedia is about as close as we can get.
