What is sound doctine? Forums like this have 1000s of threads created that faciliate countless doctrinal debates about a myriad of subjects from faith to works and beyond. The point of this thread is to define and bring to the surface what the Bible points out pertaining to the subject of doctrine. I'd like to start by exploring a text from Titus to help shed some light on this issue.

Titus 1:14-2:1
..be tough when it comes to showing up their wrong ways, so they can become healthy in the faith.14 [And don’t allow them to] pay attention to Jewish myths or the rules of men, and thus turn themselves away from the truth. 15 For, everything is clean to those who are clean; but for those who are dirty and faithless, nothing is clean; because, both their minds and their consciences are dirty. 16 So, although they claim to know God, everything they do disproves it, because they are disgusting, disobedient, and unqualified to do anything worthwhile.
1 You, however, keep on talking about the correct, healthy teachings.

Yes.........................Sound doctrine is based on Jesus Christ alone. Anything else is suspect. If your not exalting and studying Christ what agenda are you pushing?

What traslation are you using? Just for my information...............this is so different from the kjv. This is NOT a put down of another translation, just my curiosity as to what translation you used.

All ink on paper..the written word, is a dead letter. 'The letter kills but the Spirit gives life'.
The Holy Spirit in each of us discloses His truth to the individual. Therefore it behooves us all to walk not after the flesh: logic, reason, our own Fleshly understanding, but walk after the Spirit. The problem is and always has been, that our spiritual gears got all gummed up by all the tares that the enemy/satan has sown within the ekklesia: doctrines of men and of devils, the traditions of men that love the preeminence that makes null and void the pure, liberating, empowering word of God.
Reformation is needed. A spiritual awakening in the hearts of His own. Dryness is one of His tools, when He withdraws His presence from our gatherings. This is His blessing. To make us realize that something is out of order, not quite right.
If the 'body' refuses to take note and get serious, another tool is economic calamity, on a national scale.
The 'church' isn't quite desperate enough yet. Hard times is the only thing that brought Israel to their knees to make them examine how far they have fallen
Take all our goodies away, and maybe we'll start seeking God a little stronger. Maybe we'll start testing the spirits a little better. Maybe, just maybe we'll start hungering for that first century spark. That extra something that caused the first century believers to wipe up the floor with satan. They turned their world upside down. Get that? They brought down low that upper worldly commanding authority down to the ground. They became lowly servants to the High Commanding General, Jesus Christ.
Their high authority was the Christ within their earthen vessels. Serving, not lording.
That's where we have to get to before we can ever see His truth, His doctrine, His eternal purpose for us in Him.
New wine must be put in new wine skins. The old covenant upper caste system passed away. The new covenant servanthood system is here. The Holy Spirit is the only Teacher we need to lead us into all truth. Teachers we have, but what comes out of their mouths had better be what God has put in or it is a devilish thing!
Everything by the Spirit guys. Nothing else will work.

There is nothing dead about Jesus.....
Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.
Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
Joh 1:5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

He is the Word and He is alive and well.

My apology. In context 2Cor.3:6 '.....the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life....' A person reading/studying the word of God without the breathings and flowing of the Holy Spirit as Teacher within, has no hope of grasping spiritual truth. It is 'dead' to him. Only the redeemed and regenerated spirit by the re-birth from above can hope to understand His holy word.
'Except a man be born from above he cannot see(understand) the kingdom of God.

Now THAT I agree with. In general, there is nothing more useless than an unbeliever reading the Bible....

And I am NOT being sarcastic! ;)

1 Thessalonians 5:21;

"Prove all things: hold fast that which is good".

1 John 4:1;

"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God,".

The Spirit of Truth is revealed in scripture, they go hand in hand.

I am going to disagree with ya Pizza.... The Word of God has the power to change the reader..... :)

So would it be better for an unbeliever to put their trust in a person and hope that the person they go to for answers provides them with truth as opposed to a biased personal understand of what truth may be? Is it not the word of God that comprizes the Bible that will judge the thoughts and desires of man's hearts (Hebrews 4:12)? And if that is the case, then wouldn't it be imperative that all men study, learn, and know that word?

Those that feel as you do are basically saying that without a "special decoder ring" that the Bible is unintelligible. How do you support this conclusion?

The problem is the hearts of men, ToT. I don't mean to go TOO far with my assertion, but fact is, we've all seen people in the media quote biblical text and not understand it.

If your heart is still hardened, if no one is guiding you, the results won't be all that great. I've seen it personally.

This is, IMO, the reason WE are told to reach the world -not just buy them bibles!

Pizza is saying what I've been saying. Without the Spirit guiding and breathing within us, the bible to one who has no ear for the Spirit within may as well be reading War and Peace.

And what exactly is an "ear for the spirit"? Being that man is said to be made in the image of a God that breathed His life giving spirit into man, one would think that ALL MEN would have been make to have an ear for the spirit. The question IMO has little to do with whether one has this charactoristic but instead centers upon how open one's mind/heart is to the message(s) found in the scriptures. Reading it after first concluding that it is bunk is reading it with a closed heart. This approach cannot be expected to yield very much because the reader is biased from the start. Reading it while already having drawn conclusions about one's faith is also problematic as this approach studies to find support and confirmation for a person's own preconceptions and it limits the reader's abiliy to see truth in a more accurate manner and limits the Bible's ability to be a guiding light to that person.

It's alarming to me to hear people claim to have the spirit in them helping them to understand and know God's way being at odds with other people who make the very same claim. Both parties cannot be being honest with us or themselves when this is the case. I believe many people have fallen victim to self deceit as it relates to them and the presummed guidance of the Holy Spirit. Many say they have the spirit but the evidence of having the spirit is not reflected in them.

Kinda funny - I objected to what I THOUGHT was someone saying "the Bible is a dead letter", now I'm almost saying it myself!

I remember trying to read the bible as a 15 year old - and REALLY have a time with it.
Two years later, a pastor who was in a ham radio club with me sat me down and spoke to me, gave me some guidance. Within a few months, after talking with Dennis a bit AND reading the very same Bible - I had accepted Jesus.

Matt.16:17 is a good example. (Mine) flesh and blood (natural intellect) has not revealed this unto you, but My Father which is in heaven'. The Holy Spirit within is Teacher and the revealer of all spiritual truth. Read my latest post in 'the natural man', and Edward's.

Am I understanding this correctly that it is not possible for a nonbeliever to pick up a Bible and come to know the Lord? That the Bible is useless to anyone except a believer?

Wip, I got saved by the drawing of the Holy Spirit. That's the only way anyone gets saved. If someone is reading the bible, and they get saved, it's because the Holy Spirit opened their understanding and drew them in.
There are theologians that are barking in hell right now because they refused the wooings of the Holy Spirit. Their arrogance and intellect they refused to lay down. As a little child they must come. Not full of the knowledge of the tree of good and evil.

I hear what you're saying and I agree, but scripture also says believing comes by hearing and I submit one way to hear the Word is directly from God's pen...the written testaments. Would you agree?
