St. Augustine comes to mind first. From such a hedonistic life to a life devoted to Christ.
St. Paul. Killing Christians to helping save their souls.
I will think of less obvious examples later.
Russian writer, Dostoyevsky, claimed this to be true. He felt bigger sinners had more empathy to offer sinners in the world.
In that case, I should be grateful for my period of decadence and rejection of God. It made me realise how much confusion, how much self respect you can lose if you go off the rails.
Someone who stays an upright Christian all their lives. Follows the rules, never strays. Will they have the same compassion for a sinner? I am doubting it. So maybe Dostoyevsky is right. So our sinful phase is a necessary phase in our life. Part of our maturing. Part of our growth. Carl Jung might add that it is an essential part of the individuation process. Becoming whole.

Some people experience their rebellious phase during teenage years. I think this is ideal, as there is so much life left after teen years, to live as a responsible citizen and a worthy child of God.

It's interesting, isn't it? It seems that those who have sinned and walked a dark path, perhaps until they've hit that rock bottom seem to know what it is to truly be blind and find the light. Those that choose God in that state probably don't want to go back to what they were before. I am reminded of Paul/Saul of Tarsus.

An interesting analogy is that good teachers were often naughty students.
Not always of course.
It helps you understand naughty.

Because if a teacher can read the mind of the naughtiest student, he can be one step ahead. Know what to expect and know not to over react.

It's like AA meetings. No one understands alcoholism better than a former alcoholic.
That moment of utter desperation when they reach rock bottom. When they have absolutely no one else to turn to but God.
So what about the majority of people who never reach a rock bottom of sin? That go through life relatively sinless except maybe spiritual pride. I'm thinking of the regular Churchgoer here. They spend their whole life abiding the Commandments. Controversy free lives. Possibly looked up to in the community . Highly respected.
Dostoyevsky might be saying that such people haven't plumbed the depths of their soul. They have never suffered crippling guilt. They don't know what utter humiliation and desperation are like. To feel like the absolute dregs of society. To feel suicidal. To have no one to turn to.
This is what many Christians point to when they get "saved". Though I might have my reservations about the emotionalism of a "saved" ceremony in a Church, I fully appreciate that people do get saved. Do turn their life around. Jesus does save. He is out salvation. And moreover, I think he has a special place for big sinners. From absolute rejection of God to absolute surrender. People get fed up with sin. They have no one else to turn. There is no other alternative. God is their answer.

The Roman Catholic Church canonization of a saint, but I'm sure that there are many more saints that go to heaven than just the ones canonized by the R. Catholic church. Saint are people that have done the will of God, you will find out on judgement day.

I think Dostoyevsky was right... We can only draw off our own experiences. That's why people who didn't do the whole prodigal son thing and have lived a fairly straight path often don't acknowledge the evil one and his deeds.

The path i took led me deep behind enemy lines to a place of darkness... Thank God for shining the light on my life

Im not sure that it is a necessary part of life... I certainly don't recommend people fail in their life and relationships, live a life of sin, become suicidal, commit crimes, walk away from God towards the evil one, etc...
We're all individuals who have had different experiences in life and taken different paths...
Is there only one wide road to God or many narrow paths?

I would go a step further and say that people generally lack empathy for prison inmates... You just don't know unless you've been in... The state of Victoria has an especially corrupt justice system and totalitarian police force... The prison is full of people who have broken a law that isn't a criminal offence like driving offences, overdue fines/bills, etc... That's not right, prison is for criminals... There are currently political prisoners being held here for protesting against the government...

Some of the practices here are inhumane... For example; when you get sentenced in court they take you to the jail cells at the back or underneath. They hold you there until a prison vehicle comes to take you away... The cells under the courthouse in the city is known as "the yellow submarine". Cold concrete cells behind steel bars, a thin plastic mattress, a sheet and a pillow. The toilet has no seat and is utter filth, there is no shower and the food is the cheapest microwave meal u can find...

The state defies human rights by not allowing a minimum of one hour a day outside... Ive watched documentaries of the worse prisons in the world for the worse criminals in the world and they all have one hour outside... Its defined in the Geneva convention I think or the Nuremberg code... This together with solitary confinement is enough to break a person and send them insane... And i know a person who spent 9 nights in there and another that spent 14 nights in there... No fresh air... No sunlight... No one deserves that, not even the worse of criminals...

See how Satan waited for 40 days before trying to tempt Jesus... He attacks us when we are weak... And so he torments the inmate trying to build on his bitterness and resentment... This is why many offenders will repeat... But God's ministry is huge in prison... He is easy to find in there, patiently waiting for someone to come to Him in repentance...

Anyway... It is what it is

Thanks for sharing. You have a lot to offer everyone. Not just to softies like me, but those who have had a genuinely hard life.

By the way, Christ the King...
Did you see that 60 minutes story about the childcare circus family wrongfully accused and sent to jail?
That was heartbreaking and disturbing. Innocent people sent to jail because we have to believe a child's version of events over an adult's. No evidence. Seems like justice is influenced by political correctness imo.

No probs... No matter how hard someones life has been there are always people that have had even harder lives...
People like Paul... This was my favourite passage when i was inside...

I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches. Who is weak, and I do not feel weak? Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn? 2 Corinthians 11:23-29

Political correctness has indeed infiltrated the justice system and the cops... One example is the gang crime here in Melbourne. It's really bad but the police won't address it because these youths are African, the cops don't want to be seen as being racist... They were even denying the gang crime to begin with...

I didn't hear about that one but it doesn't surprise me, especially if it was in Victoria... Most corrupt cops, just look at the lawyer x scandal and the George Pell fiasco...

Did u see that guy who went to check himself into the mental ward of a hospital? After about 24 hours the guy escaped the hospital... When the cops detained him one of them stomped his head into the concrete which put him in a coma... The police officer didn't even get charged, he just got a suspension. This happened 10 days ago and i've been checking everyday to try and find out the condition of Timothy Atkins but i can't find anything... So much is happening down here atm that such a despicable act has been quickly forgotten... He could be dead for all we know

Check out these stats... The first alarming stat is that the prison population has almost doubled in 10 years...
Most of the increase is from people that are now being imprisoned for misdemeanors and non-criminal offences

The really sad thing is that almost half of them end up back in jail...
Thats a reflection of the failure of our prison system to be able to get inmates back into society...
Its also a reflection on how many people struggle without God...

It's really easy to point the finger but every one has their own story... You come out of jail with nothing... You may be at peace with your past, God has forgiven you, your family and friends are accepting you but in the eyes of society you will always be a criminal... There is no forgiveness... Your branded for life... Everything is harder, from housing to employment and police attention is greater now too
