RIVER OF LIFE
From: Ron Hawks
“If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink...John 7:37."
What thoughts and emotions do you usually experience when you direct your attention to God? Do you come before Him out of a sense of obligation or discipline, or do you often approach God with some anticipation and hope? Do you hope or doubt your encounter with Him will be profitable to you?
Many times we come to God directly from battling the pressures of life. We squeeze in some time to seek the Lord before running off somewhere to accomplish the next thing on our list. And all too often we are shrouded with a sense of duty – as if we were completing our math homework, of finishing our final task of the work day. David, however, describes the Lord in a much more exciting way. He writes, “Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of Your wings. They feast on the abundance of Your house; You give them drink from Your River of delights. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light.” (Psalm 36:7-9)
We can run to God in worship! He is an Eagle overshadowing us with His wings of protection. He provides plentifully. We don’t need to seek out our existence in life or the spiritual realm. In His house there is abundance! God doesn’t want you to simply “put your time in” with Him. He wants you to experience delight in Him. In Him, you have been given and can experience the fullness of God. (Colossians 2:10) He is the deepest fulfillment of all your desires – He is delightful. Remember, Jesus came that you might have abundant life! (John 10:10)
Do these verses describe your most recent encounters with the Lord? They most certainly can describe your next ones. As you direct your attention toward God, declare (out loud) the above verses from Psalms, and let them sink into your spirit and soul. Allow yourself to “feel” His protection enfold you. Drink from His River of Life – receive the Holy Spirit’s power and revelation today. Allow your mind to receive impressions from Him – jot them down to consider more clearly and deeply. Declare that your life is in Him and that – in all truth - He is your life. Let this truth inform your body, soul, and spirit – and wait on the Lord, allowing yourself to perceive His life.
This is the kind of worship God has for you – filling and satisfying worship. He isn’t looking for your diligent, perfunctory sacrifice of time; He wants to engage you in adventure and a sense of journey today. Jesus said, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink.” (John 7:37) Would you like to drink from His River of delights today? Delighting with you, Pastor Tom
