What you are saying of the biblical writers quoting OT scripture is what I would call biblical theology.
I agree with stranger here. Though I am no expert whatsoever in this branch of study, Biblical Theology seems more appealing to me. It avoids the temptation of stringing together a bunch of verses that seeming support a particular doctrine or thought. Biblical theology points out the continued revelation of God throughout Biblical history. It almost forces you to start at the beginning to test whether or not a system of theology is correct... or not.

I will give an excellent example of Biblical Theology, by our Master Himself:

the context ---> Luke 24:13-24

and

Luke 24:25 Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
Luke 24:26 Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. <--- that is Biblical theology. :)
