At the creation of the world, God made every living creature with the ability to reproduce. God said “each after his own kind.” As humans, we not only pass on our physical characteristics, but our children learn from us and follow our example. Things like how we handle stress and responsibilities are passed on to our children and they follow us.

Think about the first two kings of Israel. Saul was a man that people looked up to, literally. He stood head and shoulder about the others. Yet the story of his life reveals cowardice and disobedience to God. When Goliath defied the armies of Israel, a whole army of cowards was fearful and would not stand up to Goliath because they were following their leader Saul. They lacked faith and power that comes through knowing who they were as God’s children and the power that was given them.

David stepped forward in faith and bravely fought Goliath when he was still “but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.” (1 Samuel 17:42) He set the example of bravery and faith in God that followed him, as he became king. In 2 Samuel 21 we read of four more giants who challenged Israel, but each time a young man was ready to meet each giant. In 2 Samuel 23 we have a list of thirty-seven mighty men who followed David’s example of bravery.

Christian today face a different enemy, are weapons are spiritual not carnal. Instead we face a spiritual battle. When we face the giants do we stand strong like David or do we compromise and shrink away like Saul? The choices we make today will effect the next generation.

What kind of kids are you creating? Do they see you shrink from the trials of life or do they see you attack with tenacity and faith?

When you child acts like you, does it make you feel blue?
