Lexy had been thinking all summer about homeschooling Jake. So she has made the decision and got him signed up with A Beka. This is the same program we did with her for a couple of years. It's is from the Pensacola, FL Christian College. It's an advanced program and she did very well, outscoring others in her grade level in state testing.
Last year Jake did fine and made honor roll but we were not happy with what was actually achieved and this next year they get even heavier into common core math and English.
A Beka addresses this issue on their site. In examining the different methods used in common core, here is what they said..http://www.abeka.com/resources/commoncore.aspx
History classes in our public school appear to be more about adapting to the world than looking at history and civics and learning from it.

We are hoping the public school here co-operates with us by complying with state laws here that say Jake can attend classes at the school as well, such as PE and art. His one concern is about not seeing his friends so this approach should help with that.

As for me, I'm pleased as punch with her decision. :)

hurrah for Lexy :sohappy

Friends? There is 4H ...little league... maybe other home school kids to take field trips with...

Homeschooling is a great alternative for today.Look at our public schools.Private schools are expensive and sometimes not that much better. If a parent is going to homeschool their kids don't they have to be well trained?

A Beka provides really good teacher's edition books and guide lines so for me with Lexy is was easy and really fun. She was in elementary so it is very basic work. I wouldn't have been able to teach the junior/senior levels of math or say physics.
Now it's even better than it was. They have an online streaming classroom program. All the teachers are Christians and licensed educators. If you have any questions they are available by email.
So it's a matter of watching the class presentation and doing the work. The parent or whomever, is more of a moderator and teacher's aid. Later on if need be he can always take say a math class in the public school system.
EDIT; take math classes from A Beka and get a tutor if needed is the better solution!
