We needn't go to the news to find the answer. The identity of the "star of Bethlehem" is given to us by God:

Matthew 2:1-2 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is He that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen His star in the east, and are come to worship Him.

2:9-10 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.

Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

And if you get lost at night, you can follow the moon home.

Just as Whitestone has put it, this was an angel...

Rev 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

Stars are used as symbols of angels.

None of those passages show what the star was. We certainly can't just pick instances of the use of "star" and use them to say what the star was at Jesus' birth. It could very well have been a natural phenomena. Scripture simply doesn't say.

Just for fun, try following a star some night and see where it leads you. Be sure to take a GPS with you to find your way home again.

It would have to be a light source in low synchronous orbit over Bethelehem. Of course it would not be difficult for God to have placed an angel (or something else) in such a spot.

However, it does not seem likely that God would do this. Consider what the placement of this 'star' caused: The pagan astrologers followed it to Herod (and told him about the new King). This led to the slaughter of many innocent children! This sounds more like the work of some other person than God!

Did the 'star' have any other purpose in scripture?

Mat 2:16 ¶ Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
Mat 2:17 - Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
Mat 2:18 - In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.

That slaughter fulfilled prophecy.

Jer 31:15 ¶ Thus saith the LORD; A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, [and] bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children refused to be comforted for her children, because they [were] not.

Then, why would God warn the pagan astrologers ?
